About the event
Tewkesbury Ride out
For this months ride we are heading to the historic town of Tewkesbury starting out in Chepstow taking us on a day’s riding through the scenic Forest of Dean, Malvern Hills and the Wye Valley.
The market town of Tewkesbury formed around the 7th century and was originally named Theocsbury after a Saxon monk who founded a hermitage. Situated on the confluence of the river Severn and the river Avon it subsequently grew following the construction of Tewkesbury Abbey in 12th century. The river connections gave it an impressive place in trading, this was followed by the railways and more recently the M5 and M50 motorways!
The town history includes being a key part of the War of the Roses where the Battle of Tewkesbury took place in 1471, the own was known for brewing and malting, pin making, boat building, stocking knitting frames, and mustard in which Shakespeare’s character Falstaff used the line “Wit as thick as Tewkesbury mustard”.
While there enjoy a stroll in the medieval streets, particularly Church street with its half timbered houses and alley ways or viewing the Abbey.
